2. ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRO-TINNED WIRE OVER HOT DIP TINNED WIRE

We do tin coating by electroplating over the copper wire in thicker gauges such as 2.2mm and further draw it down to the requires size. The wire drawn in such manner is more suitable for direct extrusion specially when the insulation thickness is very small. The diameter of tinned wire made by Hot dip process is non-uniform and will always lead to problems during extrusion leading poor efficiency and higher scrap generation. Moreover the coating thickness in Hot dip process also cannot be controlled precisely whereas in Eletro-Tinning the tin thickness can be controlled precisely to the accuracy of 0.1Micron.

Another advantage of electrodeposited tin over hot dipped tin lies in the fact that a tin deposit remains pure, while in the hot-dip process the molten metal tends to pick up increasing quantities of basis metals until it must be discarded. Many of the contaminating metals tend to cause weak or brittle solder joints. Uniformity of electrodeposit thickness tends to provide uniform solder joints.
